The city of Hattusa was built on top of a hillside. It was the capital of hittite. Today this city is not intact. But we can still see its remains in the centre of turkiye. It was surrounded by enormous brick walls to protect itself against any danger. Almost 7000 people used to live in the city. It had temples, and a stone rampart which could be seen from a distance easily. But none of it remains there now. The city is just ruins.
There are no kind of pillars or walls that have remained intact to tell us the truth about their palace or temples. But the foundations of buildings are still there. Although they are covered by dry grass, we can tell easily that something was here centuries ago. Some gates are still there to tell us that there was once a great wall here. There are lions, gods with axes and sphinxes on the gates.
The damage has been done because of the floods and snow melts. These factors have changed the look of that long standing civilization. Buildings which had the clay tablets are ruined now. But we still find clues from the ruins. Which gives us an idea about the people of this great empire.
Hittites were so powerful that they used to control almost all of the turkiye, along with the black sea shores and the rivers of mesopotamia. The Mediterranean Sea was also very much controlled by them. On the outskirts of Anatolia there were many cities and foundations of hittites. It is at this point that we have found clay tablets. Telling us about the city and their sacred rituals along with many kinds of different languages.
Their main focus was on trading. People and the kings of hittite benefited from trade for a very long time. The hittites were so powerful that they would tangle their ways with the ramses of egypt. There was a great battle known as the battle of kadesh. Which resulted as the first ever peace treaty of the world.
They were so powerful that they used to fight with the egyptians, assyrians and the babylonians. So powerful that all of these civilizations would take them as equals. Yet all of the other civilisations are intact on the pages of history but we do not find anything about hattusa.
Hittities were completely ignored until there were some clay tablets in egypt. Which were telling us about the army of egypt to go and hunt for this amazing city and its empire named hittite. The digs started in the early days of 1900. That is how we find out about the city of hattusa.
